Sharad Yadav moves Delhi high court against trial court order
Janata Dal president Sharad Yadav on Wednesday filed a revision petition in the Delhi high court challenging the trial court order for framing charges against him in the Rs 650 million hawala scam.
Special Central Bureau of Investigation Judge V B Gupta on August 1 ordered framing of charges against Yadav under Section 120-B of the Indian Penal Code (criminal conspiracy) and Sections 7, 11, 12 and 13 (2) read with 13 (1) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The high court is likely to take up the revision petition
on Thursday.
In his 154-page order, Gupta noted that the prosecution was
able to establish that the money had been paid to Sharad Yadav
by the Jains.
The CBI had alleged in its chargesheet that Yadav had accepted Rs 500,000 as illegal gratification from the hawala dealers.
The court noted that Yadav, while he was Union minister
for textiles and food processing industries, had dealt with the
application of Bhilai Engineering Corporation Ltd, owned by
the Jains.
The judgment said that Yadav made an extra-judicial
confession in a programme telecast on Zee TV on August 28, 1994 about receiving Rs 300,000.
