Govt promises quick action on Assam accord

The Union government on Monday promised immediate efforts to effectively implement the Assam accord.

This was communicated by Home Minister Indrajit Gupta at a tripartite meeting of the leaders of the All Assam Students Union, the Assam government and representatives of the central government. Participants said not much progress was achieved on the issue of outsiders in the state either because the laws were or because they were improperly implemented.

Gupta said he would visit certain sectors of the Indo-Bangladesh border to study the problem of illegal immigration. He said he would speak to leaders of all political parties to evolve a consensus on the issue of foreigners and added that a proper timeframe had to be fixed for implementing various clauses of the accord.

The meeting was attended by Assam Chief Minister P K Mahanta, AASU president Sarbanada Sonwal, Union Home Secretary K Padmanabhaiah and other senior officials.
