Enforcement Directorate summons 'untraceable' Rao kin

The Enforcement Directorate has summoned P V Prabhakar Rao, son of former prime minister P V Narasimha Rao, to appear before it at New Delhi on Tuesday, August 12, in connection with the Rs 1.33 billion urea scam.

However, ED officials could not serve the notice on Rao till late Friday afternoon as he was ''untraceable'', sources said.

''An officer has been deputed to serve the notice, but he (Prabhakar Rao) and his family members appear to have moved out of their residence,'' the sources added.

The ED headquarters issued a fresh notice to Rao on August 7 after a Supreme Court bench cancelled the anticipatory bail granted to him by the Andhra Pradesh high court.

The apex court also gave a free hand to the ED to arrest Prabhakar Rao for alleged violation of the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act in the urea scam.

ED sources indicated that Prabhakar Rao and four others -- Sambasiva Rao, Sanjeeva Rao, Prakash Yadav and A V Anand -- were likely to be interrogated by its officers before their possible arrest.

Opposing Rao's anticipatory bail plea before the Andhra Pradesh high court, the ED counsel alleged that the former prime minister's son had received Rs 140 million as ''commission'' in the deal.

The Turkey-based Karsan company, which has offered to the Central Bureau of Investigation an ''out of the court settlement'', was contracted to supply 200,000 tonnes of urea to the public sector National Fertilisers Limited. However, the CBI had reportedly rejected Karsan's offer and sought the Swiss government's assistance for deporting two Karsan officials and transfer of $ 10 million deposited in Swiss banks.

Soon after the apex court cancelled his anticipatory bail, Rao was closeted with his counsel till the night of August 5 and since then has been ''incommunicado'' to the media. The Hyderabad ED office, which received his fresh summons from the headquarters on Thursday, was also unable to trace him.
