Targeting the indifferent middle class

April 3, 2009
Dr Mona Shah, an eye surgeon in a municipal hospital, decided to enter politics after the terror attack on Mumbai last year. Dr Shah has been fielded by the Professionals Party of India.

The PPI fields only those candidates who have no political experience.

Dr Shah aims to reach out to the educated but indifferent middle class, who make up a sizeable chunk of the voter base in Mumbai South. She says that she wants to target the 'non-vote bank' section of society; people who have not taken the time out to vote.

Only 37 per cent of the middle-class section in South Mumbai turned up to vote in the 2004 LS polls.
