59.8 per cent turnout in first phase of Karnataka polls

The democratic responsibilities were discharged far better in the rural areas while compared to Bangalore in the first phase of the Karnataka elections, which concluded at 5 pm on Saturday. Overall, a poll percentage of 59.8 per cent was recorded in the 89 constituencies in which 953 candidates battled it out while pinning their hopes on the 1.73 crore voters.
According to Deputy Chief Election Commissioner R Bhattacharya, the turnout in the rural areas was 64 per cent, while in the urban areas it was just 50 per cent. Bhattacharya said that polling was peaceful and there were no reports of any untoward incidents such as booth capture or violence. Security was tight during the elections and nearly 1.5 lakh security personnel, including paramilitary forces, were deployed across all the 89 constituencies. Apart from security personnel, 7,700 officials monitored the polls, which were held in 18,598 polling booths.
