Below, President Richard M Nixon is welcomed by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in New Delhi, 1969. This visit, soon after the Apollo 11 moon landing, was Nixon's third India trip. He visited as vice-president in 1953 and paid a private visit in 1967.
Ironically, Tricky Dick -- as some in the American media dubbed him -- was the most hostile of American Presidents, sending the USS Enterprise to the Bay of Bengal during India's 1971 war with Pakistan, presumably to scare the Indians. That is something Indians old enough to be around then will never forget.
