For 29 years, Shashi Tharoor and the United Nations were inseparable. And last year, Tharoor nearly made it to the pinnacle at the world body when he ran for Secretary General. On March 28, the Under Secretary General for Communications and Public Information gave his last speech there.
Tharoor conducted the celebration of the European Union's 50th anniversary. Tharoor leaves his UN job on March 30. That ends his five-year tenure in the present post.
The 51-year-old Shashi Tharoor joined the UN in 1978. He has served in various capacities including the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, overlooking UN peacekeeping operations and as executive assistant to former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
Last year, he was India's official candidate for the post of Secretary General. He came second in that race, losing out to South Korea's Ban ki-Moon.
