During investigations, the police found out that Bennett had bought a ticket from Goa to Mumbai. But he got down at Roha, which is way before the train reaches the Maharashtra capital.
Interestingly, he had bought a ticket in the unreserved compartment. And no one knows what prompted Bennett to get off Roha.
The police, while insisting that the villagers are responsible for Bennett's death, however, cannot explain what Bennett did for three days in Roha after alighting from the train.
Another interesting twist to the case came after Bennett's family claimed he was threatened in Goa by some people. Bennett had reportedly called home and told his family about the threats.
Bennett's sister Amanda has been quoted as saying that the villagers are innocent and that there is a deeper mystery behind her brother's disappearance and death.
"We knew he was in trouble but we were too far away to help him," she reportedly said.
"We couldn't get in touch with anyone despite trying and trying. No one responded. It feels like there's no protection for anyone over there," Amanda told newspapers in London.
Giving another twist to the case, Bennett's mother Maurin in a letter to the British High Commission in India has reportedly said that her son was a drug addict and also suffering from AIDS.
