Reard and Heim were actually rivals, each competing to create the world's first revolutionary two-piece swimsuit. Heim surfaced first with something called an Atome, named after the particle. He called it the 'world's smallest bathing suit.'
Reard went a step further, working with just 27.5 inches and dropping the bottom half of his two-piece suit below the navel. It was shocking, but people couldn't keep their eyes off it.
They still can't.
