The bikini is 60!
The bikini gets its name from the Bikini atoll in the western chain of the Marshall Islands in the Pacific. It was named two weeks after an atomic bomb test was conducted there.
Historians point out that, at the time, pop culture often borrowed words from military lingo. It explains, for instance, where 'blonde bombshells' come from. The fashion press in Paris, however, suggested that the bikini got its name because it looked as if its wearer was emerging in tatters from a nuclear bomb blast, wearing what little was left over!
