The man who shot the Pope
Agca has always given conflicting reasons for why he shot the Pope, leading to a number of conspiracy theories. He spent 20 years in an Italian prison, but was set free in 2000 after a pardon at the behest of the Pope. He had to spend another 5 years in prison in Turkey though, where he was extradited on a separate for robbery and the 1979 murder of a newspaper editor called Abdi Ipekci.
His release has led to relief among supporters, anger among Ipeki's relatives and concern among Italian authorities. Agca, now 48, could face threats to his life because he may know too much.
