Saddam was sentenced to death on November 5 for his involvement in the Dujail massacres of 1982, when 148 Shiite Muslims were killed for attempting to assassinate him.
The sentence was welcomed by the Shias, while the Sunnis, particularly in Tikrit, mourned.
Internationally, the conduct of the trial came under much criticism, even by the Human Rights Watch. The Iraqi government was accused of interfering in the proceedings.
