Sunita in space

December 16, 2006
Thundering into the darkness, lighting up the starless wintry night sky with a bright streak, US Space Shuttle Discovery lifted off on December 9. On board are seven international crew members, including Sunita Williams, who is of Indian origin.

The arrival of Discovery sets the stage for the continuation of station construction. Inside Discovery's payload bay is the P5 integrated truss structure. The STS-116 crew have already conducted two of three spacewalks to install the P5 structure and to reconfigure and redistribute power generated by the station.

"Sunita sent us a photo that shows her in a cabin with all kinds of machinery around. She looked happy, healthy and very excited and that is all that counts," her father Deepak Pandya told rediff.com from his home in Hawaii.
