Mozart meets India

Thiruvasagam was a highly successful but loss-making project," say Raj.

Though Thiruvasagam hurt Tamil Maiyam financially, they were sure that it would not stop them from experimenting again.

"We knew we failed in taking our music to a global audience last time. So, our main objective for our second project was to achieve that."

But why a blend of Carnatic music and Western classical?

"Carnatic music is melodious but Western people are not fascinated by this melody because they cannot relate to it. It is also because Carnatic music is a monotone. But our music has more depth.

"Technically when you bring to traditions together, it is fusion. But how do you do it without tampering with the fundamentals? So, we decided not to deviate even an inch from the tradition of say, a raaga. We maintain the purity and grammar of the raaga in Mozart Meets India. Then, we brought in the harmony element with the same discipline and purity. We decided to see whether both can travel together."
