Rukmini was Krishna's first wife and is considered an incarnation of the goddess Lakshmi.
Rukmini, the daughter of King Bheeshmaka of Vidharbha, was very enamoured of Krishna for his noble qualities.
However, Rukmini had an elder brother named Rukmi who was not in favour of his sister's alliance with Krishna. The reason: King Kansa who was killed by Krishna was his friend.
So Rukmi tries to prevent Rukmini from marrying Krishna by influencing their father and suggesting she marry a friend of his. But Rukmini overhears the conversation and arranges to elope.
