Sisters and brothers we worship
August 9, 2006
Ravana and Surpanakha
The king of Lanka -- portrayed as a demon in the Ramayan but who is worshipped by some -- had two sisters: Surpanakha and Kumbhini.
Of them Surpanakha is better known since it was thanks to her that Ravana ends up abducting Sita.
Surpanakha shows up in the Dandaka forest, where Rama, Lakshman and Sita are spending their vanvas, and starts flirting with Rama. When she is unsuccessful she tries to attack Sita. Lakshman cut off her nose and ears and send her back. Surpanakha flees, wailing, to Ravana and urges him to take revenge on her behalf. The rest, as they say, is history.
