The pride of Kolkata

August 3, 2006
You are bound to be awed by its magnificence, you sure to be bowled over by its serenity," says Bengali literary legend Sunil Gangopadhyay while describing Curzon's dream in white marble.

"If the building's structure amazes you, the treasures that it houses are sure to strike the right chord of your heart," he says.

The memorial contains an awesome collection of the history of Kolkata. Each of its halls boasts of paintings, sculptures and manuscripts from the British Raj, their artistic brilliance out of the world.

In the central hall, scenes from Queen Victoria's life were painted by Frank Salisbury. The marble statue of the young queen is by Sir Thomas Brock.

The memorial also has statues honouring doyens of the Raj -- Robert Clive, Warren Hastings, Lord Cornwallis, Lord Wellesley and Lord Dalhousie.
