I was in Ahmedabad and at around 8.55 AM felt my knee bending on its own. I felt and got worried if I was feeling giddy. Soon the sofas stutterred and my mother got worried if her grand children was rocking the sofas. But the stuttering continued. Then we woke up to the fact that it was the earthquake. We stay on the IVth floor of the building. We came out of our houses but both my parents cannot run down the stairs. All the people came out of the houses. Those on the 1st and IInd floor ran down but those on the IIIrd and the IVth floor had no other go but to rush to the terrace. We did exactly that. By this time the building was rocking like a pendulum. It was a strange experience. We were chanting the name of gods. When we feel shaky, we hold on to the walls, but what do we hold when the walls are itself shaking. However soon the shake stopped. But after a few seconds, it started shaking again. This again continued for a few seconds and stopped. But these seconds are longer than hours. But now the shakes stopped for good. However we still waited for almost half an hour before slowly making our way down to the ground floor through the stairs. There were rumours abounding. We then went round to nearby places. To our horror we found lots of building floored down. There was lot of disaster all around. A lot of buildings where we were planning to buy houses were submerged to the ground. Since it is said that we should go out to open places during earthquake, we went out to the outskirts of the city passing enroute our known people. All across the roads were crowded as most people were on roads. We came back to our house by evening. When we switched on the TV we were horror struck. The news portrayed the wide struck destruction. Over the next 2-3 days also we had small tremors and by the time we realised deep in sleep the tremor used to stop but still the people would be out on streets. I used to stay in Bombay those days with my wife and children returned back to Bombay on 30th January. But the tremors did happen for some days on. We were travelling in a Gypsy vehicle and all of a sudden our driver told us that something trouble in in tyres. On his left he asked one to see and on left he himself tried to look from window on a slow moving vehicles. Immediately we saw all the vehicle applying breakes and on our left side an auto driver told our driver, what are you seeking, earthquack has occurd and everything was moving. The long standing trees on the road were moving from one end to the end and are the people were tring to move to safer places, which they deem fit. This process continues for many minutes till the shock settled down. The trama was such that the standing vehicles on the road were seen travelling on a muddy roads, moving from one side to the other. I was sitting online when all this happened.My computer and the table started vibrating.It didn't strike me then that it could be an earthquake.It's only when my friend sent an instant message that the same thing was happening at his side.Suddenly the windows also started vibrating and making loud noise.My dog started barking loudly.I went in the balcony to check out the scenario there.I could see the cars in the parking vibrating.The whole thing lasted for around 2 minutes.It gradually subsided. It was a terrible experience I and my family had, with God's grace me and my family were safe. But not all the families were so fortunate. We were able to rush out of our first floor govt. house on time. Me and my mom had a narrow escape, while coming out of the building, when all the debri started falling and the some part of the ceiling and roof started coming off. In that tragic accident i lost five of my classmates and some other known people. Now, my family stays in Delhi for last few years as my dad was transferred there. I live in United States and I had a phone conversation with my family just about 45 minutes before the quake. My dad called me as soon as the Quake happened and I was shocked and horrified on listening that, because of my terrible experience in Bhuj Quake. He called me within minutes of the quake on my cellphone and told me they are fine, he knows that how fast the news travels over diffrent mediums, as I myself worked for a few years with one of the largest read newspapers in India, when I was in India. But just imagine sitting thousands of miles away from your family, how it feels, when you hear something like this. I pray to God for all the people who suffred any kind of loss. I could always remember the incident which occured when i was doing my I st year engineering in 2001( a private college nearly 100 km from chennai) .It happened in mid september . The time was around 7 .45 p.m and we were about 250 students in our hostel premises . As we were I st year students we used to take our dinner by 7 p.m in our mess hall and we left to our hostel block at 7 .15 pm after completing our dinner. we were in second floor . The only way to our floor will be closed everyday to avoid seniors coming to our block during that time . The gate keeper as usual on that day closed the door and went to have his dinner . Now the time was around 7.45 i felt someone shaking my cot , suddenly i saw everyone screaming earthquake and ran near the exit which was closed . The earthquake lasted just few seconds and even its magnitude was below 4 ( which i heard from the news next day ) .We got struck in the second floor and we shouted which was heard by some of the seniors who were in another block which was nearly 300 m from our block . They came to rescue .on that day whole night we slept in our playground fearing that they will be aftershocks .It was really frustrating moment.It was really a unforgettable day in my life. Singh Email: ramesh@iitk.ac.in Quake Experience: An Alarm for the Northern parts of India The epicenter of earthquake of October 8, 2005 occurred at latitude 34.43 N and Longitude 73.5 E with magnitude 7.6 according to USGS. Its effect was felt severly in the northern part of India (Jammu and Kashmir and Delhi). The Government of India must take this earthquake seriously since the Himalayan region is seismically prone regions and with the occurring of this earthquake in Pakistan which connects with the fault line running from Kashmir to the eastern part of India (Assam) which is also very active where reasonably mild earthquakes of magnitude 5 are being observed after the Sumatra earthquake of December 26, 2004. In the last 100 years no major earthquake of around magnitude earthquake has taken in between the two end (western and eastern parts of India) and in future a major earthquake is expected in future. In the last 100 years, the population in the northern part of India has increased significantly and the Disaster Cell must ensure that the people living in this part must follow the seismic code specially while making the high rise buildings. Dr. Singh is very much concern about similar earthquakes in Future in UP Himalaya and the state Government and Central Government must make serious efforts to monitor seismicity in the region and also try to teach the public how to cope the situation in such a major earthquakes which is expected in near future since such earthquakes are not occurred since last 100 years. According to Professor Ramesh P. Singh, IIT Kanpur, he has also stressed the need of deploying dense network of Seismic network to monitor earthquakes in the Central part of India. City: Lahore Sat Oct 8 23:40:22 2005 Name: Dr. Vikram Email: vikramrana1@rediffmail.com Quake Experience: i am dr vikram. i am doing postgraduation in department of medicine at SK institute of medical sciences ,Soura, Kashmir. today morning was quite terrible.i was in ward examining a patient.meanwhile i noticed that the bed of my patient is shaking. first i attributed it to patient but with in next few seconds, the whole ward started shaking. poor patients and thier attendents starting shouting and running out of ward. i turned my head towards window,i noticed that trees, towers are huging with eachother. i also started runing out of the ward. when i reached the coridoor, the scene was quite horrible. poor patients were running with theirs catheters and ryels tube hanging.the whole institute was swinging like anything.this whole period lasted for about 3-4 minutes.unfortunatly the scene didnot end. after few hours,there was rush of ambulances outside the casuality with lot of injured people few of them on the way breat thier last. more than 12 hours have passed but that fear is still in front of eyes. I felt it twice during the day and both the times it was a strange experience. I was sitting in the conference hall of my college with 120 other future managers, my colleagues, thinking of getting through the summer internship of one of the most respected FMCG companies of India, HLL and then suddenly I felt my bench is shaking. No this was not just another prank of my BITS Pilani pass out colleague, it was a phenomenon which i had read in my geography books only till now, the earthquake. Someone used the public address system ingeniuosly and broadcasted the message of earthquake for the other ignorant minds, actually engrossed in HLL dreams. The moment we came to know about it, we started making our exit, and that very moment HLL top guns came in the hall. I am sure they would have never seen such a walk out in any of the campuses till now, but this was a different situation all together, a matter of life and death. One thing which I noticed is that even in this state of emergency, almost no one lost his calmness. People who do not mind breaking the que in canteen during lunch did not even mind to give way for other people first. As a strong supporter of our traditions and cultural practices I have always advocated celebration of our Indian festivals, But today I will say "YES" it must be banned right away. The reason being the recent earthquake which has killed more than 19,000 people in Pakistan administered Kashmir and 600 in Jammu and Kashmir region. When in 2001 Gujarat underwent the same disaster due to earthquake, it expected the entire world to feel it's pain and agony to the hilt. But today after watching the corpses of such a huge scale of men,women and innocent children in both sides of the divide, the Gujarat looks unaffected as if it belongs to some other planet devoid of humanness. How can anybody even think of going to these Garba dances and play mind-boggling music at this hour of tragedy and mourning. We cannot sleep if our neighbour's children are dying and crying frantically for our help. At least if we are true human beings and do feel it can happen to us too any moment , any day and anywhere. When the entire world is galvanised and searching appropriate ways to react over this gigantic scale of death and destruction how can even be so much shameless to go on and play Gaba or Dandiya in the name of Durga Puja.
