India supports IAEA vote to refer Iran to UNSC

< Back > < Next >

On Sunday, the International Atomic Energy Agency's board approved a resolution that sets up Iran for future referral to the United Nations Security Council. India has voted in favour of the resolution.

However, the United Progressive Alliance's Left allies and the opposition slammed the government for supporting the resolution on Iran's nuclear issue, saying it was done under US pressure.

The government has said India's decision was aimed at averting a 'major confrontation' between Tehran and the international community. It said it did not act under any US pressure.

Meanwhile, Iran voiced surprise over India's support to the IAEA vote. With Iran threatening to reconsider its economic and trade ties with the countries that voted against its nuclear programme at IAEA, India said it has not been given any indication by Tehran to review its long-standing cooperation which was in the interest of both countries.

The US, however, has lauded India's decision.
