Padma Awards: India honours her achievers
Breaking protocol, President Kalam walked down to the wheelchair-bound Rasipuram Krishnaswami Laxman, to confer the Padma Vibhushan on him. The ace cartoonist, the President said, had the unique ability to evoke joy and sorrow with the same stroke.
A visibly moved Laxman said he was delighted to receive the award.
In all, the President came down from the podium on seven occasions, to honour awardees who were either too old or disabled.
