The peace process failed to take off, with Arafat rejecting Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak's proposal to grant Palestine control of huge tracts of the West Bank in 2000 as unacceptable. The increasing frustration among the Palestinians led to further violence, and hundreds of Palestinian youngsters were shot dead after attacks on Israeli soldiers.
