Shortly after the first Gulf War, Arafat held several secret meetings with Israeli leaders Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres in Norway under US auspices.
After prolonged negotiations, Arafat and the then prime minister Yitzhak Rabin shook hands and signed a historic peace agreement in Washington, DC on September 13, 1993.
Rabin, Peres, and Arafat won the Nobel peace prize in 1994. Two years later, Arafat was elected president of the Palestinian National Authority.
