The USS Cushing is based in Yokosuka, Japan. It operates mostly in the Asia Pacific region.
During port calls in Japan, the ship is known to welcome visitors on board while the crew participates in community projects.
Mumbai's citizens didn't get an opportunity to visit the ship but the ship's crew spent about three hours at the Helen Keller Institute for the Deaf and Deaf Blind in Byculla, southcentral Mumbai, and, among other things, painted its classrooms.
Their profession may involve destruction but the ultimate aim is to play a constructive role in society.
