The USS Cushing, designed and built in Pascagoula, Mississippi, is a Spruance-class destroyer.
Spruance-class destroyers were the first large US Navy warships to use gas turbine engines whose main advantage is quick response time.
The USS Cushing has a displacement of just over 8,000 tonnes. Its estimated life span is 30 years.
The destroyer is powered by four gas turbine engines, which produce approximately 20,000 HP each and are capable of moving the ship at speeds of over 30 knots.
The USS Cushing can operate independently or in tandem with amphibious or carrier task forces. Its primary mission is under sea warfare for which it is equipped with the SQQ-89 sonar system, one of the most advanced in the world.
