The festival was always celebrated at the homes of people. But it became a public event during the 1920s after a call given by freedom fighter Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, who used the festival to rally the people to fight against British colonialism.

Here, Lok Sabha Speaker Manohar Joshi joins the Ganesh visarjan rally at Dadar-TT circle.
