Janmashtami celebrations are held on a grand scale in all Krishna temples, especially the ones in Vrindavan in Mathura (Uttar Pradesh) and Dwarka (Gujarat).
The dahi handi celebration, which is specific to Maharashtra, involves an earthen pot (handi) filled with curd and jowar, a coarse foodgrain, and a cash prize.
The pot is tied from a high rope and young men form a human pyramid by climbing upon one another to break the pot. Then the contents are eaten as prasad and the prize pocketed by the winning group amid shouts of 'Govinda', 'Govinda', another of Krishna's thousand names.
