Janmashtami marks the birth of Lord Krishna, who was born under the Rohini nakshatram (star) on Bhadrapad Krishna Ashtami (the eighth day of the waning moon in the Hindu month of Shravan). The festival is also known as Sri Krishna Jayanti and Gokulashtami.
