Criminal who conspired to eliminate Advani, Modi killed: Police

Samir Khan, the alleged mastermind of a plan to eliminate Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, was shot dead in an encounter in the Usmanpura area in Ahmedabad in the wee hours of Tuesday, police said.

Samir Khan, a Pakistani Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist, was arrested in September in Madhya Pradesh and brought to the city for interrogation, they said.

He was being taken to a spot near the Vidyasagar High School bus stand by a police team headed by Crime Branch Sub Inspector K M Vaghela around 0200 IST 'to confirm the location' where he and his associates had killed a police constable Vishnu Jhala in 1996.

As soon as they reached the spot, Khan snatched Vaghela's revolver and tried to flee, police said.

In the ensuing encounter, the terrorist was injured and rushed to the civil hospital were he was declared dead, they said.

He is believed to have undergone training for three years in militant camps in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir, Rawalpindi and Karachi, police sources said.

Police had on October 1 claimed that Khan, along with six associates, had hatched a conspiracy to eliminate Advani, Modi, VHP leader Pravin Togadiya and prominent religious leaders during the course of the Gujarat Gaurav Yatra or at any other public function.
