Eight Indians killed in Dubai roof collapse

Eight Indians were on Sunday crushed to death and several injured when the roof of an under-construction power plant in the Jebel Ali industrial area, 45 km from Dubai, collapsed.

Seventeen persons were injured in the incident while two are still missing.

"All but one of the 17 injured are also Indians," I P Mohanan, consul at the Indian consulate in Dubai told PTI.

One of the injured, a Nepalese, is reported to be in critical condition at a hospital in Dubai.

The deceased are:
Lekhraj (Jalandhar, Punjab),
Shiv Ghagwan (Sikar, Rajasthan),
Har Sahai (Delhi),
Sadula Samuel (Nizamabad, Andhra Pradesh),
R K Verma (Uttar Pradesh),
Penta Lakshmaiah,
Surjit Singh,
Shankar .

The two missing are Kulwinder Singh (Amritsar, Punjab) and Guruswamy S Kumar.

Legal formalities have to be completed before deciding whether the bodies will be sent to India, Mohanan said. A case is yet to be registered, he added.

Meanwhile, an inquiry has been ordered into the incident by the Dubai Power Authority (DEWA).

This is the second major accident at a public utility site in Dubai this year. More than 20 persons, including five Indians, were killed in a flooding accident at the Dubai dry dock, one of the world's major ship repair facilities, in March this year.
