5 Indians among 22 dead in
Dubai dry docks accident

At least 22 people, including five Indians, were killed and seven were still missing in the flooding of a dry dock in Dubai, one of the world's biggest ship repair facilities.

The mishap occurred on Wednesday. Of the seven people as yet unaccounted, four are Indians, a press release issued by the dock authorities said.

"Divers led by a Dubai police team continue their search for the missing workers but there is little hope of finding any survivors at this stage," the release added.

An Indian consulate official confirmed that bodies of five Indians - K Philip George, Alex Samuel, Sunil Kumar Narayanan, M Pasha (all from Kerala) and M R Naidu from Andhra Pradesh - have been identified. The missing Indian workers are: V Kesavan and Ivan Simathy from Kerala and B Palani and Dilli Ganesh from Tamil Nadu.

The Dubai dry docks management said the next of kin of all victims were being informed.

Dock number 2, where the accident occurred will not be operational for at least until mid April, the release said adding the reason for the failure of the two dock gate panels was under investigation.

"The Dubai dry docks deeply regrets the human tragedy in this incident and our sincere sympathy goes out to the injured employees and the bereaved families of our employees," it said.
