Overflowing rivers are continuing to pose a threat to several districts in north Bihar affecting over 10 million in flood-hit areas.
With five major rivers, including the Gandak, Kosi, Bagmati, flowing above the danger mark, the situation is likely to worsen on Saturday, officials of the Central Water Commission (CWC) said.
An official of the Flood Control Cell of the state government told rediff.com that there was tremendous pressure on the embankments due to the swollen rivers though no fresh breach had been reported.
After making an aerial survey of Darbanga, Gopalganj and Samastipur districts along with Union Minister of State for Home I D Swamy, Defence Minister George Fernandes on Friday said that the situation was very critical.
He will submit his report to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Saturday.
According to reports, this are the worst-ever floods in recent years. Madhubani and Sitamarhi districts have also been hit.
Though the official death toll is just over 100, a senior administration official said 'we have included only deaths that have been confirmed, not those who were away swept by floodwaters or are untraceable', hinting that the actual toll may be much higher.
