"As many as four MI-8 helicopters were pressed into service for the conduct of flood relief operations in the affected districts of Madhubani, Sitamarhi, Darbhanga and Muzzafarpur. They dropped 140 tonnes of food packets between July 23 and 28," official sources said in Delhi on Thursday.
In addition, three sorties have been undertaken by IL-76 aircraft to airlift 14 tonnes of food packets, eight boats and 170 army personnel from Sarsawa (in Bihar) and Delhi to the flood affected areas, they said.
Following another request by the Bihar government, the IAF pressed into service four MI-8 helicopters since July 30 to rescue marooned villagers and drop essential commodities in Samastipur district, the sources said.
Meanwhile, five columns of the army were pressed into service to provide relief and rescue marooned people in flood affected areas of Assam, which include the districts of Morigaon, Kamrup, Goalpara and Dhubri.
