Former Kerala minister released from jail

Kerala Congress (B) leader and former minister R Balakrishna Pillai and former chairman of the state electricity board (KSEB) P Kesava Pillai were on Saturday released from jail after being granted bail by the Supreme Court in the Graphite India Ltd. case.

The apex court granted them bail while admitting applications against their conviction and sentence by a trial court.

The Kerala High Court had confirmed the order of the trial court convicting the duo and sentencing them to one-year imprisonment under the Prevention of Corruption Act, on March two.

The accused had surrendered before the special vigilance court in Trivandrum on March 16 and were in jail since then.

It was alleged that the accused had abused their official position and illegally sold power to Graphite India Limited, a Bangalore-based company, causing losses to the Kerala electricity board.
