It admitted the Special Leave Petitions filed by both accused challenging the verdict of the Kerala High Court, which confirmed their conviction on March two.
A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice A S Anand, Justice R C Lahoti and Justice Brijesh Kumar directed that both the accused be released on furnishing bail bonds of Rs 20,000 each with two sureties in like amounts.
Both were convicted by a trial court in 1996 on corruption charges and sentenced to one-year rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000 each.
Balakrishna Pillai is accused of conspiring with Kesava Pillai to illegally sell 12,241,440 power units to Karnataka Electricity Board for supply to Graphite India Ltd thereby causing huge financial loss to the state.
