5 killed in Assam militant attack

Five people were shot dead and four others injured in an attack by the United People's Democratic Solidarity militants in central Assam's Karbi Anglong district on Monday.

Militants armed with sophisticated weapons, including AK 47s, raided a village under Santipur police station area and shot dead the five persons after barging into their houses, official sources said in Guwahati.

The ultras escaped under the cover of darkness.

Among those killed were four people of Assamese origin and one belonging to a minority community, the sources said.

The identity of the injured persons were yet to be ascertained.

Police were yet to ascertain the motive behind the attack.

On December 28, eight Biharis, including one woman and three children, were gunned down by UPDS militants at Rongnagar village in Karbi Anglong district.
