Bodo representatives discuss statehood with government

Representatives from various Bodo groups today conveyed their viewpoints on the formation of a separate Bodo state during their discussions with Union home ministry officials.

The discussions, held against the backdrop of the killing of Santhals by Bodo militants, assume significance particularly since the Centre wants a permanent solution to the ethnic problem in Assam.

Today's meeting, held under the chairmanship of additional sedcretary (home), P D Shenoy, was attended by major Bodo groups, apart from senior Assam government officials. Home ministry officials said the meeting, which was held in a cordial atmosphere, agreed to meet again tomorrow to further discuss the pending issues.

Leaders of the All Bodo Students Union, the Peoples Democratic Front, the Bodo Land Peoples Action Council, the Bodo Sahitya Sabha, the United National Liberation Tribal Front and the All Bodo Women's Welfare Front attended Monday's meeting. Some MPs and MLAs of the Bodo Autonomous Council also attended the meeting, which will continue tomorrow.
