Rain toll reaches 29 in Tamil NaduThe toll in rain-related incidents in Tamil Nadu rose to 29 on Saturday, with four more deaths reported from various parts. A report from Madurai said two women were killed and five others injured at Keelathope when a two-storeyed building, surrounded by the swirling Vaigai river, collapsed at 1am IST. Eleven persons, who were marooned, were rescued in the morning. River waters washed away a person in Madras who went to attend the call of nature. His body has not been traced. In Cuddalore, two more died, taking the toll there to five. Eight villages in Cuddalore taluk (block) were affected. Crops in 2,740 acres are under water. People in low-lying areas near the Kadilam and Pennar rivers, both in spate, were moved to safer places. Traffic on the Madras-Kumbakonam highway was diverted via Perambalur. Traffic in the Nilgiris was affected by landslides near Marappalam. Madras experienced sudden showers on Saturday morning. Heavy rains have been forecast throughout the state in the next 24 hours. The Vaigai river continues to be in spate, marooning three villages in Dindigul district. UNI
