Rain toll reaches 16 in Tamil NaduThe toll in rain-related incidents in Tamil Nadu has risen to 16, with 12 more deaths reported on Friday. A report from Perambalur said three people, two of them women, were washed away in flash floods at Mettur village. A couple was electrocuted at Tillaipuram near Namakkal, and a 55-year-old man was killed in a wall-collapse near Ulundurpet. In Salem, a 30-year-old-man died of the cold, and a 35-year-old cyclist was run over by a bus after he slipped and fell in rain water. In Madurai, where the river Vaigai is in spate, a 45-year-old man was washed away. A report from Cuddalore said three people, including two children, were washed away in floods. In Tanjavur, a woman drowned in a tank. The weather office, meanwhile, has forecast heavy rains at isolated places in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and lakshadweep during the next 48 hours. Cold wave conditions prevailed in Kashmir and south Rajasthan. Night temperatures were appreciably below normal in north central Maharashtra, Vidarbha and in parts of Saurashtra and Kutch, and were below normal in parts of northeast Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and south central Maharashtra. They were appreciably above normal in parts of south Knkan and Goa, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, south interior Karnataka, and above normal in parts of Assam, Meghalaya, Bihar plains, Himachal Pradesh and Kerala. They were normal over the rest of the country outside Arunachal Ppradesh and sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim from where the data were sparse. Rain or thundershowers occurred at many places in Lakshadweep, and at a few places in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Rayalaseema, south interior Karnataka, Kerala and at isolated places in Assam and Meghalaya. Mainly dry weather prevailed over the rest of the country. Rain or thundershowers are likely at most places in Tamil Nadu, at many places in Kerala, Lakshadweep, at a few places in Rayalaseema and coastal and south interior Karnataka, and at isolated places in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and south coastal Andhra Pradesh. Mainly dry weather will prevail over the rest of the country.
