From: revathi.advaithi@professionals.com <radvaith@uoknor.edu> Date sent: Mon, 9 Dec 1996 13:27:15 -0800 (PST) Person Nominated : Visalam Swamy Reasons : My mother - for being a source of towering strength for all her five daughters in time of need. For achieving her goals through prayer and percistance. For maintaining her sense of humor. winning friends in all age groups in a new land without k nowledge of english language. For refusing to change her belief in the innante goodness of all human beings. For being a great mother, mother in law, grandmother, friend and aunt. Not a soul in India comes close to what my sixty year old mother has achiev ed the last one year. To give an example: When the young and the active men and women of R.K Shanmugam Rd, K.K. Nagar, Madras continued to live for more than a week in knee deep water after the storm, my mother took matters into her own hand. She called the office of the CM Ka runanadhi, spoke to his secretary, gave him a piece of her mind and a lecture. He respectfully put her on to the Commissioner of Flood control - she gave him a lecture and within an hour the street was cleared of the one week old dirty stagnant water. Thi s one of her latest achievement apart from the other things she has accomplished over the year as a women on the move for family, friends and the community. My mother Mrs Visalam Swamy is defiently the person of the year. On her 60the B'day this Jan 3rd 1 997, I I think she deserves this nomination more than all the other people who only did their duty and got paid for it, while she did more than her duty selflessly, not expecting anything in return.
