Better still, his films have not done too bad either. Just last year, his unconventional Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! was a success at the box office.

So what next for this dashing Deol? Well, he is ready to take on both Dilip Kumar and Shah Rukh Khan in a modern take of Devdas titled Dev D. The film, which releases this month, is directed by Anurag Kashyap and stars Kalki Koechlin, Mahi Gill and Dibyendu Bhattacharya.

What is Dev D about? How different is it from the original Devdas?

Dev D is a modern version of Devdas. It has the same story as Devdas.

You are the fourth person to play the main character after K L Saigal, Dilip Kumar and Shah Rukh Khan. Did that put pressure on you?

Any role is challenging. If I start thinking about these actors and what they have done, I would not have been able to focus on my work. My job is to do my best.

How did the script come to you?

Well, the script did not come to me. It was an idea that I had come up with and which I then narrated to many people.

As my Devdas is a contemporary one, I substituted the places with Mumbai and sometimes Los Angeles. I narrated the story to friends. Sometimes I even gave them clues. What amazed me was that they never guessed that the story was about Devdas. I was focused on the fact that this iconic story and it's an iconic character could be made once again by twisting it around and giving it a new lease of life.
