Looking back, how has the transition been?
It has been a great journey. I never took things seriously and nobody took me as a serious singer. My first 10 releases as a playback singer were all popular songs. But they were all for films that didn't do well be it Ashoka, Indian, Bas Itna Sa Kwaab Hai, Pyar Ishq Mohhabbat, Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi and 1 2 Ka 4. It was less effort but great response.
I was happy with the way people behaved with me as my father was well known in the industry. So when ever I went to a composer, I wasn't pushed away. I think Jatin-Lalit were the only people who I approached with a demo tape. I had also met Anu Malik with Sagarika and it was great to work with him. It is said that the industry doesn't welcome newcomers, and later when you get popular or famous, their attitude changes. But for me it was smooth going all the way.
Who are your favourite composers?
I got my initial playback break with Aadesh, so he is my favourite. I've worked most with Anuji so I share a good rapport with him. Also with Jatin-Lalit. Did great work with Vishal-Shekhar as well. We started off together and it has been a fantastic journey. We all used to hang out together. And of course Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. I owe a lot of my success as a playback singer to them. They gave me great and important songs to show off my talent.
