You recorded a devotional music album Ek Omkaar on chants from the Sikh holy book Guru Granth Sahib. What made you record an album? Are you a trained singer?
I have never taken any professional training in music nor have I ever thought that I would sing for an album. I was really surprised when Universal Music first approached me for this album. They may have read an article of mine -- published after I was released from jail -- where I had mentioned I could overcome the trauma because God was by my side.
How was the experience of recording an album?
It was an exciting experience. Singing gave me confidence in my capabilities. It is good to learn singing because it helps you develop so many expressions.
This album is about chanting God's prayers and saying his words. I have sung it from my heart. It is a compilation of revered chants from the Guru Granth Sahib. I am a fluent in Punjabi but these chants are in proper Punjabi, which was tough at first. After sometime, I became comfortable with it.
