Devdas has been immortalised on the big screen for as many as 12 times. Yet, filmmakers are still drawn to Saratchandra Chattopadhyaya's tragic tale, first published in 1917.
Anurag Kashyap is the newest director to take up Devdas' story, and film his version, titled Dev D. The film stars Abhay Deol, and newcomers Kalki Koechlin and Mahi Gill.
In the first part of an extensive interview, Kashyap talks to Patcy N about the Devdas obsession.
The story has been filmed 12 times already. What made you take it up again?
If I had to make a film on today's youth, people would run away, and I would not have got anyone to back the project. But the moment you say Devdas, people get interested. So I needed Devdas to be able to make my film.
Besides, Dev D is very different from Devdas.
