Dev D is a contemporary take on Devdas. What changes can we expect?
The spirit of Devdas has changed, so the entire film is different. The whole premise of Devdas was based on miscommunication. But this is the age of communication, where people can talk to each other every day if they want to.
Also, alcohol was a tabboo in those days, when the novel was written. People who drank were usually society's outcasts. But alcohol is part of our lives today. And there are various other modes of self destruction.
Devdas' emotions were very external -- he was like a drama queen. He would make a show of how much he loves Paro. But this Devdas is more internal -- he doesn't even talk about Paro. He doesn't share Paro with anyone. It's his pain, and he carries it inside him.
There are no naachnewaalis or kotas today, so what would Chandramukhi be today? How would Paro be, since sexuality is not in the closet any more?
In the past, the three characters were an appendage, they just took the story forward. Dev D is about three people -- Chanda, Paro and Dev.
