Newman married his first wife, Jackie Witt in 1949, and had a son and two daughters with her before the marriage culminated in 1958.
His son Scott was an emerging actor himself when he died of a tragic drug overdose. A distraught Newman founded the Scott Newman Center for Drug Abuse in memory of his son's death.
Newman later married actress Joan Woodward (whom he had first met on the sets of Broadway play The Picnic) and had three daughters with her. He has been with her ever since and they have been married for just over 50 years.
In fact, they marked their 50th year together in January this year. A devoted father and husband, Newman is survived by his wife, five daughters and eight grandchildren.
