'I am not a star'

Ashta Chamma is a heroine-centric film. Did you not have any inhibitions in doing it?

I am not a star (laughs). Even if one is a star, a movie works only if the script is good. I was laughing throughout the narration by Mohankrishna, and it was only at the end that I remembered my role. As an assistant director, I used to discuss scripts with friends and so my concentration was only on the script.

Swati and you were initially the second leads but were later promoted to play the main leads. Do you have anything to say about that?

When I was asked by the director to play Mahesh, the main lead, I was shocked. When I asked who would the do the role of Anand (the second lead) I was told that they were still looking. They asked me if I was ready to play the main lead. Doing Mahesh was a challenge.

You performed like a seasoned artiste. What do you attribute your acting skills to?

Actually, even I can't say. Those who have seen the film tell me so. I did have doubts about my acting. But the fact that I wasn't afraid must have something to do with it.

Did being an AD help you in acting?

Of course, talent has to be there. Some get nervous facing the camera with so many people around. Even talented people may not give their best in such an atmosphere for various reasons. Because I was an AD, I was neither nervous nor scared. I could do what I wanted.
