'My father never forced me to get into music'

Have you got any offers in Hindi?

I am doing a children's film Castle of the Light Hunters which is 60 per cent animation and 40 per cent live shoot. It's an experimental film being directed by Venu. I am getting offers and opportunities but I don't want to accept too many.

What do you look for when you’re composing for films? Is it the script?

Yes, the main thing is the script and whether the project offers scope for good music. Then I look at the comfort level between the director and myself.

Was your father happy with your decision to turn music composer?

My father never forced me to get into music. I learnt sax and still practice whenever I can. I learnt Carnatic vocal from Srinath Marathe for some years. I have lived with music around me and always interacted with my father. I used to keep the talam for my father in his concerts.

When I wanted to get into composing he told me, 'don't expect any contacts from my side'. Actually my turning to scoring music happened accidentally. I was into software and programming and was looking for a placement.

The Prince of Arcot, Asaf Ali, a friend, who is a musician initiated me into music. He is a composer himself and well versed with technology. I recorded the album Dream Journey with my Dad in his studio. So far we have brought out four volumes of Dream Journey. My father always believes music is universal and goes beyond barriers of language, caste or creed.

We are thinking of bringing out Volume 5 because that series is popular. I am also planning instrumental and fusion albums with Indian and international artistes.
