Joni Mitchell was born in Fort MacLeod, Canada, on November 7, 1943. Recovering from polio as a child, the singer taught herself to play guitar and began strumming folk music while still in college.
After landing a record contract, she began publishing songs that got other artistes a lot of success. When Joni finally debuted as a solo performer herself, the hits simply began to flow.
Her career led to Rolling Stone listing her among the greatest songwriters ever. Joni was always critical of the music industry though. She announced her retirement in 1998, but brought joy to millions nine years later by releasing Shine in 2007.
