On November 4, 1970, Tabassum Hashmi Khan -- or, simply, Tabu -- was born in Hyderabad.
Following the divorce of her parents when she was still very young, Tabu moved to Mumbai, where she studied for a while. Her big screen debut arrived when she was just 15, playing Dev Anand's daughter in 1985's Hum Naujawan.
After her first solid role -- in the Telugu film Coolie No 1 -- she landed her first Bollywood lead role with the forgettable Pehla Pehla Pyar. Vijaypath, opposite Ajay Devgan in 1994, got her the Filmfare Best Female Debut Award though, and a star was born.
Tabu went on to win the National Film Award for Best Actress twice. Thanks to her performances in Maqbool, Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities and The Namesake, she is now recognised as a unique talent, from whom we expect a lot more in the years to come.
