A young literature student from Lahore moves to Bombay to act, strikes up camaraderie -- and a long working relationship -- with a young director called Guru Dutt, gets his first break from his favourite star Ashok Kumar, marries his leading lady Kalpana Kartik, and so overriding is his charisma that he is 'banned' from wearing a black suit in public because it was making women swoon too fatally over him.
He continues to be the most debonair man in the industry, still defying the odds and making films he considers relevant.
Playing Devsaab would require a man both devilishly handsome and capable of great acting. We'll settle for the next best thing: blue-eyed Neil Nitin Mukesh in the title role, but with all his dialogues dubbed by Devsaab himself, in that oh so iconic fashion.
